How Many Tiles Do I Need? Coverage, Waste and Box Calculator Guide
Tiles are sold in boxes, and each box covers a fixed area. Measure the room, add an allowance for cuts, then round up to whole boxes so every tile comes from the same batch.
Step 1: measure the area
Multiply length by width in metres for each surface. For L-shaped rooms, split the room into rectangles and add them together. Subtract large openings such as a bath panel or window recess only if they are bigger than about 1 square metre.
Step 2: add a waste allowance
Order about 10% extra for straight layouts. Use 15% for herringbone, chevron or diagonal layouts, and for very small rooms with many cuts.
The extra tiles also cover future repairs, which matters because a later order can come from a slightly different production batch.
Step 3: round up to whole boxes
Divide the total area by the area one box covers and round up. Two square metres on a box that covers 1.08 square metres needs two boxes, which is 2.16 square metres.
On Terranova Tiles you can enter your area in square metres, a number of tiles or a number of boxes, and the basket rounds up to whole boxes for you.
